Message from the Executive Director
Empowering people with disabilities to maximize their independence is building momentum in our rural communities. The 2011 fiscal year marked a monumental change in the face of Services for Independent Living as we opened the doors to branch offices in Moberly and Mexico Missouri, serving consumers in Randolph, Audrain and Montgomery Counties. We are committed to expanding services in areas with limited resources, to consumers with unmet needs. In the process, we are building partnerships with referral agencies and a network of civic clubs and organizations while stimulating the economy by hiring employees residing in the counties they work. We are intentional in our efforts to become a resource to all the communities we serve.
Consistent with our core services of advocacy, independent living skills training, peer support and information and referral; the Board of Directors has identified youth transitioning from high school, veterans, individuals who are deaf, individuals who are blind and health-related services as targets for expansion. New resources from Missouri Foundation for Health for basic support and City of Columbia/Boone County Social Services for youth work readiness are examples of how we are accomplishing our goals. However, none of this would be possible without commitment from a dedicated Board of Directors, professional and knowledgeable staff, generous funders, faithful volunteers, a supportive community and consumers who give purpose to everything we do.
Services for Independent Living aspires to become a model Center for Independent Living and to create inclusive communities that promote equality, self-determination and the elimination of all barriers to independence. The ultimate fulfillment of this goal requires the enhancement of program services and facilities. The Board of Directors has engaged in the process of a feasibility study to determine the likely success of a capital campaign to raise funds for a new programming center. Independent of the outcome, Services for Independent Living will forge ahead strategically to meet the growing needs of seniors and people with disabilities.
Thank you for your support of maximizing independence!
